If you have a broken doorknob or you want to replace your old one, then you’re probably wondering how you can remove and change the doorknob. Changing your doorknob is actually a quick and easy process. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to replace your old doorknob.
Remove the Doorknob
You will need to have a Phillips screwdriver to remove your doorknob. Firstly, you have to remove the screws that hold one side of the old knob into place, then if there are any screws on the other side of the doorknob, remove them. Now, both of the knobs should be removable together with their plate covers.
Pull the Latch and Remove the strike plate.
In some doorknobs, the latch can be removed with just a bit of force, while some latches have screws holding them in place, so you will need to use a screwdriver to remove them. Then, Use the screwdriver to remove the strike plate from the door.
Looking for a new doorknob
First, examine your latch for a number indicating either 2-3/4 or 2-3/8 inches, which is the measurement of the basket of the doorknob. Ensure that the new doorknob you choose meets the measurements of your previous doorknob. If you want to purchase a doorknob with a lock, you should note which side of the door you want the locking mechanism to be in, or note which side is the exterior doorknob because doorknobs are not reversible.
Install the new Latch
Once you are done looking for your new doorknob, whatever its design is, whether futuristic or rustic, the first step to installation would always be the insertion of the latch into the door.
Install the First Knob
Look at your two knobs. Pick up the one that has an extending rod intended to connect with the other knob and latch. You should then hold this knob into position at the center of the doorknob hole, then slide the rod to connect it to the latch. After that, you can now screw the knob into the doorframe. Lock the latch mechanisms in place by screwing them down.
Install the second Knob
You then need to install the second knob by holding it in place and make sure that it is interlocked with the rod mechanism of the first knob. Then, screw the second knob in place.
Install the Strike Plate
Finally, attach the strike plate to the doorframe using the screws provided. Ensure that the bent edge is facing where the door swing is directed.
